California writes a new chapter in student literacy as Governor Newsom signs Assembly Bill 1454 into law, surrounded by education advocates who came together to support this historic investment.
California K-8 students will now learn to read through evidence-based phonetic instruction based on decades of peer-reviewed research. The new legislation provides funding to:
- Train teachers on the science of English Language Arts Instruction
- Design curriculum grounded in peer-reviewed research
- Adopt textbooks that employ evidence-based literacy lessonsĀ
- Assess program outcomes to ensure all students are progressing
- Screen and support students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia
These programs are a statewide reflection of the commitment to English Learning Arts that Alliance schools provide with our advanced teacher training and curriculum development. Educational leaders also praised the whole-student and extended enrichment support programs that Alliance prioritizes with our after-school and summer learning programs.
Alliance looks forward to all California students benefiting from this state investment in literacy.
