Debbie & Milt Valera

Honorees, Frank E. Baxter Heroes Award

Debbie and Milt Valera are dedicated philanthropists whose giving is rooted in a deep belief in education, health care, opportunity, and community. From their earliest days when their resources were modest, their commitment to giving was always passionate. They continue to firmly believe in supporting institutions that open doors for others.

Their philanthropic focus in the San Fernando Valley includes a particularly meaningful commitment to Alliance College-Ready Public Schools. In recognition of their leadership and enduring partnership, Alliance named Milt and Debbie Valera Middle Academy in their honor. The Valeras’ support at the Academy extends well beyond philanthropy: they are regularly present on campus, maintain a close relationship with the school’s principal, and engage directly with scholars and teachers.

They frequently meet with students to share their personal stories of humble beginnings, emphasizing perseverance, education, and service. Milt often speaks about his own educational journey—from Los Angeles City College to California State University, Northridge—as an example of how accessible, high-quality public education can create pathways to success. These conversations reinforce the Valeras’ belief that every student deserves the opportunity to thrive, regardless of background.

In addition to Alliance, the Valeras are active in supporting CSUN and LACC with student scholarships and foster youth programs, as well as the arts, where they are prominent benefactors of the Soraya Performing Arts Center at CSUN.

Their financial impact at Cedars-Providence Tarzana Hospital and with Jewish causes throughout Southern California are equally impressive. Across all of their giving, they prioritize long-term impact, strong leadership, and community connection.

Milt is chairman of the National Notary Association, an educational organization based in Chatsworth that serves more than four million notaries nationwide. A graduate of LACC and CSUN, he began his career in journalism and marketing. Debbie, a Syracuse University graduate, is the former executive director and current vice chair of the NNA. After a career as a writer and editor, she partnered with Milt to help build the organization into the leading voice for America’s Notaries. Together, they have brought the NNA’s significant influence to government and the business, legal, educational and international communities, along with robust educational programs and a large publishing enterprise.

For the Valeras, philanthropy is a year-round commitment and a family value. Through their hands-on involvement and generous support, they continue to strengthen schools, expand opportunity, and inspire the next generation of philanthropists including their four children, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
